I Unit: Korean Dance  Theme: Sal Pul  Yee (Exorcism Dance)   Introduction Sal Pul Yee, as named by Sun Young Park, is also called. Salpurichum, which refers to a dance extemporaneously performed by an exorcist to put an end to bad luck. It is called Dosalpurichum or Heoteunchum. The name salpuri was first used by the traditional dancer Han Seong-jun at his theater performances in 1903.  The dancer performs to salpuri music in a white skirt and jacket, with a white handkerchief in hand to express graciousness and sentiment. It is said that the present-day salpurichum is one handed down in Gyeonggi-do and Jeolla-do Provinces. With the stabilization of the country toward the mid Joseon Dynasty and invigoration of the culture of commoners, it developed as a dance performed by clowns.  Exorcism rites were prohibited during the colonial period (1910 – 1945) and this exorcism dance came to develop purely as an artistic dance. Salpurichum is a c...

Recital Program Roughdraft / Spring 2023

SOLOS  1 Spring Dancer: Christine Chen Music  For my solo, I imagine myself as a light flower, when spring comes, with the wind is constantly flying. Sometimes it's high in the air, sometimes it's on the ground. Suddenly, the flower fell into a small river and began to swim with the current. 2 Free Waves Sarah Feguira Batista  My solo is about freeing myself in the midst of life's chaos. Some movements are calmer and slower, while others demonstrate the strength to carry on. I aim to demonstrate many of my emotions through movements in my solo and how they connect with each other.    3 Liqi Ying My story is about trying to get away from a bad accident and start a new life again.   4 Celeste Pongratz My solo portrays the feelings of being in a relationship and not knowing if the other person is falling in love still or falling out of love slowly. The questioning and unknown of what is to come can be scary but also refreshing.  5 Vulnerabi...

Narrative: Rhapsodic Composition

Image
I Unit: Dance Forms  Theme: Narrative & Rhapsodic Composition Introduction A narrative, story, or tale is any account of a series of related events or experiences, whether nonfictional or fictional. Narratives can be presented through a sequence of written or spoken words, through still or moving images, or through any combination of these. Rhapsodies on the other hand express pure feelings. We can thank the Greeks for the idea of the Rhapsody, though their rhapsodies were rather more word-based – poetry to be exact. Poetic rhapsodies were a kind of recital of all the best bits of poems, brought together in one colorful epic. And that’s really what a musical Rhapsody is, a piece of music of indeterminate length and with no formal structure, comprised of a number of different musical ideas. A Rhapsody is all about dynamics: light and shade, high and low, loud and soft, happy and sad… It's a story, a journey.   II  Learning Objectives Understand the mean...
