Time: When is Movement Performed

Main Lesson

1

TIME

Speed or Tempo: fast, medium or slow

FAST

Traveling Phrases: Use weight shifts to your advantage (pushing off from where you came from).

Turns: Push-off for quick traveling turns. .

Jumps: keep your weight toward the front of the foot. Caution with your heels when landing. Identify whether the accent of each jump is up or down.

 2

 Condition With Quickness in Mind:

Core: "The stronger your core is, the more quickly your body will move through space as a whole.

Footwork: Precise, powerful footwork is a must, especially for tall dancers, whose feet are likely to be longer.

Endurance: Moving quickly requires extra stamina, so cardio training outside of rehearsal is a must.

Recovery: Massage your calves with a ball and take time to stretch out.

3

SLOW

Movement that is sustained, which means movement that is slow motion.

Traveling Phrases: Use light weight shifts to your advantage (pushing off from where you came from).

Turns: Push-off for slow traveling turns. .

Low Impact Larger Steps: keep your weight changing form the supporting leg toward the front leg.

4

Condition With Slowness in Mind:

Core: "The stronger your core is, the more one can control the slow motion through space as a whole.

Footwork: Slow and precise foot motion is necessary.

Endurance: Moving slowly requires being focused.

Vocabulary Words

Beat: A steady time or pulse of music

Tempo: The speed of the beat (it can be slow, medium or fast)

Rhythm: A pattern of sounds that repeat

Duration: The length of time in a phrase or measure

Accent: The emphasis on a beat

A Note to Remember

Perfect timing is being able to let go and allow yourself to express your feelings through your movements, instead of trying to keep count of the beats in your head. When you achieve perfect timing, your dancing will appear relaxed and natural.

Case Study

The video below was produced by Professor Joel Wanek, artist Kristin Farr and designer Matthew Williams. Wanek works for the Geography department at UC Berkeley. He has a background in multimedia production and film-making. Farr is an artist and journalist based in the San Francisco Bay Area. She interviews artists for print and web media for Juxtapoz Magazine and KQED. She also make arts videos, interview artists and curate art projects.  Williams is an American designer, creative, and entrepreneur.

The video invites us to reflect on how fluent we are in the language of dance. The presenters detail the five elements that all forms of dance and creative movement have in common. Being able to identify and understand these core characteristics can help us when talking about a dance performance or can help us get our own messages across through movement.

This video was sponsored by Art School, a KQED Arts series featuring contemporary artists working in fine arts, performance, digital art, and more.

II. What speed did you find easier or more difficult? Why?

Post your answers on Discussion Board.

Activity

Because this class is about the inside-out dancer, after knowing the details about Time (beat, tempo, rhythm and accent), errase it all. uUing your sense of inner-rhythm, dance your ensemble and solo phrses to the asynchronus music pieces below.
